I’ve been a bit overwhelmed with trying to move from my flat to a share house. Distractions seem to pop up everywhere! I was reading all of my cooking books and licking my lips. Sadly, I was too tired from packing and lacked the desire to create dishes to clean! Instead, I went for an adventure! I got a nice oily greazy Kebab from Northcote. Mmm! Where do you go for the best kebabs? I then decided to jump on the tram and head towards Books For Cooks! I didn’t really know where it is… I just remember reading about it being on Gertrude St in Fitzroy (Melb, Australia!).

I totally recommend you check out Books For Cooks for if you would like a sticky beek! However, you should make sure to leave your credit cards at home… the prices aren’t cheap! I’ve also discovered that second hand book stores are becoming more expensive as their popularity goes.  When buying cookbooks, I usually get lucky for money at the Op Shops. The only down side to the Op-Shops is that they are usually stacked to the ceiling with microwave cooking books or really old books with no pictures to inspire you. If you are looking for that rare book or a fave with a signature from the Chef.. go to books for cooks! The woman that was working there when I visited was lovely to show me around the store.. there were books of every country, ones about healthy eatting but my fave was by far the massive collection of the Australian Women’s Weeklys. I love the Australian Women’s Weekly because it reminds me of being a child and cooking with my mum but most importantly their recipes always seem to be a success!

Anywho, I’m in the city at an internet cafe! Just about to go and see the movie ‘Only In Rome!’ I’m gonna go and explore to find some food to take in. Do you pre-make movie food? Any suggestions?

Oh, and I’ve recently been to a Nepalese restaurant in Northcote and been playing around with food at home… food & reviews to come! It shall be easier once I have moved place!

Last night I couldn’t muster up the energy to cook up a lentil dahl. I ended up having a Sargent’s pie for dinner… I was so lazy and hungry that I didn’t even put it in the oven! The microwave did a pretty good job of zapping the frozen Sargent’s pie. I hate how when you microwave frozen pies they go soggy! The pastry was nice and crisp on this Sargent’s pie. I wanted to steal a photo of what they look like from the Sargent’s website but the last thing I want is to get sued for stealing photography/pictures for my blog! Does anybody know of these copyright rules? It could be a while before I start coming up with my own recipes to share! Am I allowed to post up recipes from books that I have used to share with you guys? Please, if you know the ‘shinding’ (meaning: what’s  happening)  on copyright rules throw me a comment aye?! Until I know what’s happening and I sort out the mess with my digital camera, check out Sargent’s website: Sargent’s is an Australian pie too! Take note of their logo crafted into the pastry like a stamp! Hopefully one day I will be able to share pie recipes on this blog! Do you have a fave microwavable pie? As I ate my pie, I came across this awesome game on Facebook (social networking site)! The game is called Sweet World!

The game is totally awesome. To those familiar with FarmVille – it is very similar! I have been baking and cooking up cookies, brownies and donuts to sell! Give the game a go! It’s much easier to be a masterchef in this game than in real life! Once logged into facebook, you can access the game “Sweet World” by searching for it under the search bar and following the links. What level are you at on “Sweet World”? Any tips to the game?

{April 8, 2010}   Mango and Pumpkin BEGINS.

Welcome to the new and exciting blog Mango and Pumpkin. This is a ‘foodies’ blog that shares recipes, restaurant reviews (primarily Melbourne, Australia) and the love of food. I am no chef extraordinaire but a young 21 year old learning how to cook. I hope to inspire and create an open dialogue on my website, especially those new to cooking but enjoy eating such as myself. The website name was contrived out of my favourite fruit (mango) and vegetable (pumpkin).

Currently, I’m at my parents house as they go on holiday in Adelaide! I am fishing around for food in their cupboard (they said I could help my self). Looking in the pantry, I find cans of tomatoes, lentils and all sorts of beans and things.. I wonder if I could make dahl? The only question is, how do I make dahl with very limited ingredients?

I have recently returned from camping at a massive hippy festival in NSW near Deniliquin. The below photo spelling out “Bex” was also taken at this camp! I have clearly had too many ‘blonde beers’ and caution all my viewers to drink responsibily. lol. The festival would be a delight for any travelling foodie, it’s just a shame I didn’t bring the camera to this occasion.. there was a lot of communial cooking! In fact, Confest is what inspired me to cook something with lentils tonight!  If you love mud baths, fire twirling, saunas, hot baths, wonderful lakes, singing, drumming,nudity, yoga, massages, meditiation, community, art, craft and getting back to nature with community cooking/food stalls – go to Confest! Confest runs during Easter and New Years! The Confest website: What was even more amazing at the 4 day event was that I kept bumping into people I knew – including the Chef/Teacher from Certificate 2 in Hospitality training at the Sliding Door Cafe with PRACE.

Note:  Notice the woman in blue sitting next to me? Well, I bumped into her Confest!  Hiroku (sp?) used to be the Chef at the Sliding Door Cafe. She taught me a lot about the hospitality industry.
